Right now, government officials, decision-makers, and even advocacy organizations don’t truly know the landscape of property ownership in the state. That’s why effective policymaking at all levels of government is critical.
One effort to change that is AB889 (Gipson), which will require corporations to register the actual names of owner(s). Corporations currently have the option of not providing the names of the true owners of properties held in the name of Limited Liability Companies by simply leaving that part of the LLC registration form blank. This bill corrects that dangerous practice by requiring all corporate landlords to list their owner(s) on LLC registration forms.
This small change in LLC registration will shed light on corporate land grabs in our communities and go a long way in ending impunity.
